Chinese girls dating etiquette

So we’ve gotten a few questions lately about dating in China.

It’s an interesting topic that hits on a lot of key cultural touchpoints, so I want to take a few minutes to talk about this.

This goes back to less stable times, when marriage meant much-needed security, but of course this is by no means a purely Chinese phenomenon: In 2010, 44% of American women had married by age 25, but way way back in 1995, more than 59% had been hitched by 25.

China is relatively new to the whole modern-stable-globalized-internet (still working on that last one, really) country thing, and when your culture is over 4,000 years in the making, old habits die hard.

Chinese culture is very different from western culture. They will try very hard to ensure your home, health, clothes and food are perfect. When you plan your first meeting, be aware that most Chinese women do not drink (or only the occasional glass).

It is sometimes the case that what a westerner believes to be polite is sometimes completely the opposite of being polite in Chinese. She will ask about your financial status and your income. Unlike in the West, in China a person’s wealth is neither a big secret nor your private matter. As education is highly thought of in China, expect her to be very interested in your education level. So asking her to dinner or a show may be less awkward than going for a drink. Men are expected to pay for dinners; indeed all expenses when courting.

This is due to Chinese culture being very different from western culture, or in fact, any other culture I have come across.

It is sometimes the case that what a westerner believes to be polite is sometimes completely the opposite of being polite in Chinese culture.

You don’t want to make one embarrassing mistake that will make her think twice about dating you again. She will highly appreciate your effort and it’s amazing how just a few phrases build intimacy and help conversations along. For example they will demonstrate their feelings by being immaculately dressed / made up and by striving to look after you.I've found since my time living in China the rules of dating etiquette are much more important than they are with western women in western countries. In general, whenever I date a Chinese woman, which is mostly the case in the past eight years, I will always follow the following tips.Because of China’s rigorous college entrance examination, dating is rarely tolerated among high school students. That doesn’t mean that Chinese teens don’t have high school crushes or even relationships (mostly secret ones).

But in general, Chinese students leave high school with a lot less romantic experience than their American counterparts. However make sure you do reply the same day if they do email you first.
